Chef Umberto Bombana’s renowned Hong Kong restaurant 8 1/2 Otto E Mezzo BOMBANA now has a new sibling at the heart of modern Shanghai.
Founded on the same philosophy as the original Hong Kong restaurant, 8 1/2 Otto E Mezzo BOMBANA Shanghai proves to be just that—exceptional.
Set amongst the elegantly restored buildings of the new Rockbund development project, it’s location exudes sophistication and old-world charm, awarding diners with prime views across the Huang Pu River.
Focus is on ingredients of the finest quality and freshness, many of which are sourced directly from Italy. Diners will be spoiled with the likes of extra virgin olive oil handmade from Sicily or the prime selection of prosciuttos and cheeses found in the restaurants Ageing Room. The restaurant also make their own breads, focaccia, preserves and, of course, beautifully executed pastas.
Sampling dishes from their newly minted menu, our evening started with an amuse bouche of chargrilled pork neck with truffle and a velvety accomplishment of Foie Gras in Hazelnut sauce, both matched with a crisp rosé. Next, a fine pasta with seafood ragout led the way to our main of veal cutlet, expertly carved and served right by our table. It was a memorable moment of exuberance and made the more enjoyable with a glass of Rigal Malbec. Dessert and petit fours followed to provide the finishing touch.
No dining experience should be complete without sampling a bottle or two from the excellent wine list hand selected by General Manager and Sommelier extraordinaire Gian Luca Fusetto. The restaurant also stocks a fine collection of grappas and cocktails come courtesy of mixologist Dario Gentile.
The dedicated team led by Fusetto and Executive Chef Alan Yu are knowledgeable and their warm professionalism adds to the quality of service. Attention to detail is reflected from the polished cutlery to the warm plates on which each dish is served.
Interiors of rich golds and deep woods evoke a gentle warmth, adding contrast to features such as the mirrored facets which decorate the ceiling and the strong graphical geometrics of the carpets.
At 8 1/2 Otto E Mezzo BOMBANA, dining isn’t about food alone—just like Fellini’s 8 1/2—it is about passion, the support acts, details and most importantly, having a grand time.
