A charming new creative workspace has just established at the heart of Jing An and serves up what we can boldly claim as the best coffee in Shanghai.
The Jing An Design Centre is currently home to a dozen or so small creative businesses, designers and freelancers. It is one of the numerous co-working spaces initiated and designed by the people behind Xindanwei.
If you live in Shanghai, you may be familiar Xindanwei or “New Work Unit”. They are a multidisciplinary coworking community which provides event venues, flexible office spaces and retailing locations around the city for creatives, freelancers and self-employed people. Over the past year, they have expanded to several locations and properties around Shanghai, all of which you can check out here.
The Jing An Design Centre or Central POD (as named on the Xindanwei website) is a three-storey creative office and commercial space a few blocks west of Jing An Temple. With the final stages of renovations underway, the building already looks the part of thriving hub of creativity. We especially love the black and white patterned mosaic tiles on the ground floor and the rooftop which has great potential to be transformed into a rooftop cinema, bar or event space when completed.
The building also houses the newly opened and excellent Seesaw Cafe, located on the ground floor. Upon entering the cafe, it becomes immediately clear that these folk take their coffee seriously. Contraptions of various kinds line the counter ready to brew a siphon or hand drip coffee, and passionate baristas pour excellent cups of smooth, perfectly palatable coffee. The staff are warm and generous, and love nothing more than to share their love and knowledge of coffee with the rest of us.
With so many “creative hubs” that are popping up in the city, the Jing An Design Centre feels genuine and stands out amongst the rest as a great place to work, visit and hang out.
